What are Cataracts?
Cataracts are a slowly developing cloudiness that occurs on your lenses. It is possible to have cataracts in one or both eyes. It is estimated that approximately 24.4 million Americans suffer from cataracts. Cataracts are most common in individuals over the age of 60. If left untreated for an extended period, cataracts can cause eye inflammation, and vision loss, and lead to an increased risk of glaucoma.
Fortunately, there are screening exams that an optometrist can perform to determine if you have cataracts. Our doctors at EyeWest Vision Clinic in Rogers and St. Michael, MN, can perform these screenings, and once glasses can no longer help your vision, we will work with local cataract surgeons to take the next step to improve your vision.
When cataracts develop, you may notice cloudy, blurred vision, or even double vision. It may be more difficult to see at night, or your eyes may suddenly become sensitive to light. At the same time, you may find yourself needing more light to do things like reading or work on a craft project. You may also notice halos appearing around lights. Things may begin to look faded or yellow as cataracts continue growing.
What Can You Do?
There are a few things you can do to reduce the likelihood of cataracts forming:
- Manage health issues like diabetes
- Stop smoking
- Eat a healthy diet with fruits and vegetables that contain antioxidants
- Wear sunglasses and a hat when outside to block ultraviolet light
- Reduce your alcohol intake
When to See Our Doctor
Your lens becomes less flexible, thicker, and less transparent as you age. Proteins and fibers clump together and cause this cloudiness in your lens. When cataracts are at an advanced stage, cloudiness can be seen in the eyes. An eye screening by an optometrist will help determine if you have cataracts, and if so, the severity of your cataracts. Our doctors will discuss your concerns with you and go over safe treatment options.
