Eye Diseases

Most eye diseases do not exhibit early symptoms. This means that you may not notice any changes in your vision until your condition is at an advanced stage. Statistics show that 24 million adults in the United States cannot see or have difficulties seeing without the help of corrective lenses, and this number is projected to double by 2050. The best way to protect your vision is by visiting our optometrists at EyeWest Vision Clinic for an eye exam at least once per year.

Common Eye Diseases that Require Medical Attention

Many eye problems require urgent attention from our eye specialists in Rogers and St. Michael. We have gathered a few of the common issues that we see in our patients:

  • Conjunctivitis: Also referred to as pink eye, the common characteristic of this eye disease is tissue inflammation at the back of the eyelids. This causes your eyes to become teary, blurry, red, and you may feel like there is something in your eye. The treatment for this condition depends on the cause. For instance, our optometrist will prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs if you have allergic conjunctivitis. In the case of bacterial conjunctivitis, you will be prescribed antibiotic ointment or eye drops.
  • Cataracts: This eye disease is common among seniors. A notable sign of cataracts is diffusely blurred vision if left untreated. Besides aging, other common causes include excessive exposure to UV light and diabetes.   We work with local cataract surgeons when glasses can no longer correct your vision.
  • Diabetic Retinopathy: This eye disease is caused by too much blood sugar which alters the blood vessels in the back of the eye. This condition prevents the retina from receiving the proper nutrients to maintain vision. You are at higher risk of this eye problem if you have type 1 or 2 diabetes. The ideal treatment for this condition is laser photocoagulation, a procedure that destroys or seals the leaking or growing blood vessels in your retinas.
