Macular Degeneration

There are many different conditions that can cause problems with your vision. One of the most common and most visually devastating, is Macular Degeneration. Not only can this condition cause a deterioration of vision, it can also cause objects around you to become darker and dimmer over time.   It typically affects adults over the age of 60 and can be a result of genetics or history of smoking.

Causes of Macular Degeneration

One of the main causes of macular degeneration is aging. While this condition can occur in younger people, that's not typically what happens. If you're older, especially if you smoke or used to smoke, you may be at risk. People with a family history also have a greater risk of developing the condition, particularly if someone close to them, such as a parent, also had it. There's no cure for this condition, so preventing it if possible, and catching and monitoring it early, are the best options for defense against vision loss.

Symptoms of Macular Degeneration

Left untreated, this condition can severely damage your vision. It occurs when the macula breaks down, which is the part of the retina that controls your central vision. It can cause you to lose central vision, but does not affect peripheral vision. This can make it harder to see pictures, drive, and make out people's faces. With treatment, it's often possible to slow or halt the progression of the condition, in order to avoid blindness. However, there is no definitive cure for the condition.

Managing and Preventing Macular Degeneration

Protecting eye health starts with protecting overall health. People who smoke, suffer from obesity, eat a diet that's lacking in nutrients, and otherwise don't take care of their medical conditions may be at a greater risk for eye disease. Making sure to practice healthy eating habits, maintain a normal weight, and exercise can help. If you do have the condition, treatment may include laser therapy, medications, supplements, and more. Our eye doctor will recommend taking vitamins C and E, zinc, and copper to lower your risk for vision loss. We can also update your eyeglasses or contact prescription to improve your vision.
